Threads
In February 2023, I was a Goodall Visiting Artist in Glendale, South Carolina. I wanted to see the traces left in this post-industrial landscape before nature would cover them and visitors made the area their own. Place is experienced through cultural background and personal history. This therefore is a personal account of an in-between place, staying in a mill village house, visiting with cats and roosters, thinking about the idiosyncrasies of change, exploring the land and the archives, connecting history and observation. I began to see strings, tangles, fibers and fabrics, uncanny threads all around me. While the mill is gone, the spinning and weaving continues. Like the mills that shaped the land with their insatiable demand for cotton, timber and cheap labour, other newcomers are trying to establish themselves.
A photo book/essay in the making.
